Students can work in groups to create and perform skits to demonstrate understanding of concepts they have learned about chemical reactions. For example, they could create skits that demonstrate the types of common chemical reactions including synthesis, decomposition and displacement or they could demonstrate understanding of chemical formulae, composition and names of binary compounds using tableau.
3. Learning chemistry through art
Students could express their understanding and opinion on issues in the Science, Technology, Society and the Environment expectations related to chemical reactions. For example, students could create piece of art to demonstrate how spills from oil tanks contaminate the water and shorelines harming birds and aquatic life. Biological agents help reduce the damage of oil spills by breaking down the oil so it degrades faster.
4. Chemistry and Language arts
Creating a word wall can be an effective strategy to review appropriate terminology related to chemical reactions.
Either individually or in pairs, students could describe a term or concept using words and or pictures. You could then post all the words around the classroom and review each term as a class.
